Ranger Round-Up 2026: Week 2

Welcome to the new weekly ranger round-up, where our Summer Marine Rangers Emma and Charley as well as our Gull Ranger, Patrick, will come together to share everything they have been up to! Marine Education Centre

This week has been all about bringing the new Marine Education Centre to life. We’ve been busy organising the whole centre, refreshing the window and wall displays and making sure that our intertidal species section was fresh and ready for visitors. It’s been great seeing people stop to read about the reserve and the free July events now available to book.

On Wednesday, we opened the doors for a soft launch. After a few final touches, we welcomed locals, holidaymakers, and curious passers-by throughout the day. It was brilliant to have the chance to speak to everyone about the reserve, the wildlife they’ve spotted and their favourite memories about the reserve, alongside all the future events coming up over summer!

Rockpool Ramble - Eyemouth

We also hosted a Rockpool Ramble on Eyemouth Beach, we were extremely fortunate with the weather - sun shining down and illuminating the rockpools beautifully! We all headed down to the rockpools to explore the incredible biodiversity on our closest shoreline. Highlights included beadlet anemones, hermit crabs - with plenty of territorial behaviour on show, common shore crabs, topshells, limpets, tube worms, even a tiny scorpion fish and a crazy amount of diversity within all the kelp and seaweed species! Seeing that level of diversity right on our doorstep has made us even more excited for the rest of the season, especially with the expansive rocky shore stretching along the BMR coastline!

Coastal Clean-ups & Community Engagement

Earlier in the week, a pre-arranged coastal clean-up took place across Eyemouth and Coldingham Bay. It was fantastic to see people getting involved and helping keep our beaches clean as we head into one of our busiest months. 

We also continued our gull surveys around Eyemouth, Coldingham and St. Abbs, the chicks are growing up so fast! Some of our trustees came into the MEC for the soft launch to see how we’re settling in, it was a great chance to meet them properly and hear their favourite stories and memories of the BMR. Posters for July’s events have now been placed around the local area, with more to come soon, so make sure you keep an eye out for them if you’re passing through the towns!

Behind the Scenes

Alongside events, citizen science and community work, we’ve been busy organising new events for August… There are some very exciting things in the pipeline, and we’re looking forward to sharing more very soon. 

The rest of the week was filled with admin and preparing the MEC for the Dolphin and Cetacean Week themed weeks coming up. It’s shaping up to be a brilliant theme, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone in.
